Until 2020, I had never been to Carl Schurz Park in my life, despite thinking I had explored every major park in Manhattan. It’s located on the Upper East Side in Yorkville (between E 84 St To E 90 St) and is definitely a hidden gem.
Most people think of either Central Park, Bryant Park, Washington Square Park, or The High Line when they want to take a stroll or picnic in the city, but I think that Carl Schurz Park is one of the most highly underrated parks in all of New York.
The park runs along the East River, leaving it far away from most tourists. The park is quieter than most of the other parks in NY (which I love when I need a good break) and offers spectacular views that people always ask me “where is this??” in my Instagram DMs. There are plenty of places in the park to sit and relax whether that means throwing a picnic, reading a good book, people watching, or even sunbathing.
While walking the park you have the most amazing views of the water and are able to watch boats as they glide by. From the park promenade you can see Roosevelt Island Lighthouse, the Triborough Bridge, Randall’s and Wards islands, and Gracie Mansion, which was built during the 18th century and is the Mayor’s “official” residence.
After soaking up the sun and taking in the scenery, I make it a point to check out the dog runs. The park offers two of them and gives people a chance to play with all of the dogs, which is great if you live in an apartment that doesn’t allow pets and you’re in need of some puppy love like us.
Next time you are on the Upper East Side or more specifically in Yorkville, make sure to check out the beautiful Carl Schurz Park.
